EU Regulation and Sustainability in the European Automotive Sector

Thursday, 9 July 2009

The automotive industry continues to play a vital role at the heart of the European economy. Its impacts filter down across a wide range of other sectors, directly employing two million people and is responsible for over twelve million jobs across the continent. With the deepening global financial crisis, the world has witnessed increased instability and pressure on three co-dependent issues – economic growth, environmental protection and social well-being. In order to achieve this increasingly important sustainability, Europe, together with the Member States, must act accordingly and provide measures which are consistent, efficient and harmonised. An integrated approach, which encompasses all three sectors, is critical to solve the difficult challenges faced during this important time.

This one-day conference, hosted by the Centre for Parliamentary Studies and AWBriefing, will provide an opportunity for local practitioners, businesses, consultancies and EU officials to analyse the challenges and consider the solutions needed to facilitate the sustainable development of Europe’s automotive sector. The conference will highlight the latest developments and policy initiatives at different levels of government and will conclude with important recommendations for future actions. Delegates will have the opportunity to consider whether the recent EU initiatives reflect the needs of the private sector, as well as engage in direct contact with key policy makers in Brussels and the automotive industry.

Through a series of presentations from leading figures in automotive and public policy sectors in Brussels, participants will have the opportunity to consider some key issues including:

Creating an Action Plan for Better Integration with EU Framework

Government Policy Response, Framework Conditions and CARS 21 Progress

Safeguarding Skills, Employment and Social Costs

Long Term Global Outlook for Economic Recovery Plan

Trade Mission to Bulgaria and Romania - Register by 18 March 2009

Invest NI invites you to join our six day business Mission to Romania and Bulgaria, organised for N. Ireland companies to take advantage of the business opportunities with the EU's newest Member States.

THE MISSION - WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE AND WHY?

The Mission represents an important opportunity to explore new business possibilities as a result of Romania and Bulgaria's accession to the EU.

The Mission will provide participants with excellent opportunities to network with and introduce their products and technologies to key players in the Romanian and Bulgarian markets. You'll have the opportunity to undertake market research and to arrange company appointments through the UK Trade & Investment's Commercial Officers in Bucharest and Sofia.

Romania

Romania joined the EU on the 1 January 2007 and has continued to enjoy a stable and buoyant economy since joining. It is the second largest consumer market in Central and Eastern Europe after Poland. With a population of over 20 million, its strategic location, skilled workforce, high growth economy and substantial EU funding over the next 10 years, Romania offers NI companies major opportunities for export and investment. The UK is one of the leading foreign investors in Romania with almost €4bn of direct investment. Exports from the UK of goods to Romania have also performed well with a value of over
£600m in 2008.
Bulgaria too joined the EU on the 1 January 2007 and has continued to perform well, with robust economic growth against a backdrop of prudent fiscal policy and relatively low inflation. The country continues to attract significant foreign direct investment, with the UK being the largest investor in Bulgaria during 2006 and 2007 and sustaining its place among the leading investors for 2008 despite the global economic downturn. Trade between Bulgaria and the UK continues to expand, with UK exports to Bulgaria rising by over 20 per cent for January-November 2008 compared to the same period of 2007.

The country will receive 11 billion EUR for 2007-2013 from the EU Structural funds and the Cohesion Fund.

EU funding is going towards improving all areas of the infrastructure system, roads, rail and airports are to be improved along with a programme of urban regeneration.

Significant EU funding will be allocated to the Environment and Water sectors for the improvement of water and wastewater infrastructure and solid waste treatment infrastructure. There is the pending introduction of private-public partnerships in the water sector.

As of 1 January 2007 the corporate tax is 10 % (among the lowest in Europe) with the aim of boosting the economic activity and the FDI inflows. As of 1 January 2008 the income tax for all citizens is set to a flat rate of 10 % - one of the lowest income rates in the world and the lowest income rate in the European Union.

Bulgaria will be of particular interest to N Ireland businesses working in the areas of:

. Water, including renewable energy resources
. Environmental
. Construction (Infrastructure)
. Transport (Ports and Railways)
. ICT
Eastern Europe.
